My dog developed Rage Syndrome at 4 years old. We loved her and wanted to take the time to help her work through it, but always kept in mind that we might need to put her down. She was a small dog so it wasn’t as risky as say, a malinois developing rage syndrome, but we had to be very careful with her. We managed her Rage Syndrome with medication, safety protocols and by controlling her environment, and she lived a happy life. THAT BEING SAID. It took up so much time and money, and euthanasia was considered many times as a compassionate option. She lived to 13, I never would’ve held it against anyone who couldn’t deal with the medical bills, time requirements, or the mental health struggles that come with it.

Surely if an animal is super aggressive it’s terrified all the time and that life isn’t good for them either?

as a vet tech I agree some behaviour issues can't be stopped or controlled as and they can only escalate

I worked at a “no kill” shelter. They still euthanize for behaviour. Rehoming an animal that is aggressive is a massive liability. Not to mention their quality life I severely impacted by people trying to manage their behaviours.

Honestly I find it so weird when a dogs mauled someone to death, and the comments are all “I’ll take the dog, don’t kill”. Like there is shelters full of dogs that won’t maul you, that are happy to be living and need a home, but you want to bring a risk into your community?

Might be overkill but I think these people should see graphic photos of dog attacks when they defend overly aggressive dogs. But they might just find excuses though

I've seen someone mad because we put our 11 year old dog down because she had dementia (due to epilepsy), she literally didn't know how to play anymore and yet I'm a "murderer" 💀

As humans we think death is worst case scenario, but really suffering is the worst case scenario. Why force a dog to suffer when you can save them that pain ❤️

we tried to rehome our dog. No one wanted him because he bit. Hard. One of the shelter even was extremely mean to us when we explained the situation. We had to put him down. We tried to fix everything we could, it didn't work. He was 12

my shelter son was a behavioral euthanasia. he was such a good boy until he wasn’t, i miss him so much but it was not safe for us or for any potential adopters.

I wonder what these people want you to do in this situation. like yea, it's sad and awful but what possible other choice? the dog couldn't be trained out of it, nor it could get safely re-homed. two other choices besides euthanasia it's live in fear in your own house with an uncontrollable dog or try to make this dog somebody else problem(aka dump on shelter)🤷🏻‍♀️

no because 99.9% of people would not get a dog from a shelter with a past like this anyways making the dogs and much more cruel if it ended up in a strict no kill it would likely spend the rest of its days in kennel euthanasia is kind

having to put a dog to sleep for behavioral issues has to be one of the saddest things for owners who have had to do this. they put so much time and money into the dog and will probably always wonder what they did wrong but sometimes a dog really is just that way and there's nothing anyone did wrong. just genetics ect. and people misunderstand it so bad and judge the owners who are probably already judging themselves. I will never blame someone at all for making this decision. its so much better than waiting for the dog to seriously harm a kid or a pet

Where i live, if someone rehomes their dog and it bites the new owners or attacks someone/something. the person that rehomed the dog can go to jail!

people need to realize that behavioural euthanasia is only an option if the dog doesn't have a chance at a happy life

some dogs are genuinely is just traumatized to a point of no healing, putting them down is safer for the people around it and the dog.

My parents had to put a dog down for aggressive behavior. He bit 11 people before my mom made the call. He was so sweet towards children and that always made my mom not want to do it. Turns out he had a tumor in his head that caused the behavior issues so that was that. Nearly took a man’s hand off

It does get to a point with certain dogs where it’s safer to just let them go. Not only can it be dangerous for the owner but imagine the stress that dog is under. When you are constantly mad at everything it is so tiring and can lead to worse incidents in the future. People don’t put down dogs like this because they have given up. They do it for the safety of EVERYONE involved INCLUDING the dog.
