@nbcnews: After surviving a shot to the head at point-blank range in January 2011, Gabby Giffords rebuilt her life. Now the former congresswoman talks with NBC News' Lester Holt about her struggle with aphasia.
I get aphasia during migraines and it is insanely frustrating. I can’t imagine dealing with it 24/7

My dad’s words were “spaghetti” “spoon” and “goddamnshit!” no one knows why either 😂

My mom was diagnosed with aphasia when my mom had a brain tumor removed from her skull. The main blood vessel that was feeding the tumor had to be cut and that set off a stroke. She was a high school English teacher and would get so frustrated when she couldn’t get the right words. She always said “I used to teach this.” It’s been a tough road but she’s still here after 20 years of living with aphasia.🩷

My father is currently in hospice with Logopenic Primary Progressive Aphasia and it has been a very challenging 7 year journey with him. He is on the final road home now. 🤍

Thank you for bringing awareness. My mother suffers from aphasia after having a stroke. I’ve never seen people be more abusive than when they are forced to wait a few extra seconds for my mother to find a word. Every day she is faced with rage and disdain. She cries because of it. Hopefully educating more people about aphasia fixes their complete lack of empathy.

My poor father has aphasia with apraxia after his stroke. I hate it sooooo much for him. He knows what he wants to say, but gibberish comes out. He completely understands and wants to respond, but it's just a constant game of charades. We have it down pat now after 8 years, but for strangers it's very difficult. His words were “I don't know” “better” and “Goddamn”

She does really well! My husband has global aphasia and isn’t anywhere close to able to speak this well. He and Gabby were treated at the same rehab hospital.

My meds cause something like this and it is so frustrating. So sorry for her, bc it isn’t something that she can just stop taking like I could.. best of luck.

I took care of a woman in the hospital who could only say “chili wants arms”, “gross”, and “ew”. Chili wants arms runs through my head often lol

Considering she got shot in the head, she is freaking amazing. She must be the most hard-working person I’ve ever met. It would take a lot to get yourself back to being the way she is now, which to me, is like a normal person to be honest.
