Kevin :
I hate when people are like “well don’t all lives matter?!” Like that, in and of itself, is racism. Like, even if you give benefit of the doubt, and say they weren’t racist and we’re just being pedantic, then the response wouldn’t be “all people are racist,” because as you explained, racism necessitates power. The truly pedantic response would be all people are prejudice. Racism requires prejudice with the power to enact that prejudice. Like if people looked at the Flint water crisis and responded “well what about the water here?!” It’s like, okay maybe there are problems with your water, but this is a much more substantial issue and the focus of this movement. And further, which you touched on as well, is that if you are actually anti racist you wouldn’t be upset by someone saying all white people are racist. You understand that I know I am working on myself and I am not necessarily included in this statement, and you would also understand that based on black Americans lived experiences and the various systems of racism in our culture, it is overall safer for them to assume any given white person is racist. Just like the all men statement, tons of men refuse to call out any patriarchal behavior and understand that rape culture is so prevalent that it is safer for women to assume that any given man is unsafe. I don’t understand what is so hard about this concept. It feels like willful ignorance.
