@docwithstyle_: 🍼 Is your baby taking more than 30 minutes to finish a bottle? The nipple flow could be the problem! Recently, I evaluated a newborn who was taking 45 minutes to finish a bottle and struggling with weight gain. After observing the feeding, we discovered that the bottle nipple was too restrictive, making it difficult for the baby to transfer milk efficiently. Here’s what I want parents to know: 🍼 Most bottle feedings take about 20–30 minutes. Consistently longer feedings may signal a feeding difficulty. 🐢 Too slow: Baby may suck vigorously, become frustrated, fall asleep during feeds, or tire before taking enough milk. 💨 Too fast: Baby may cough, gulp, choke, leak milk, or struggle to coordinate sucking, swallowing, and breathing. 🔍 Not all nipples are created equal! Brands like Philips Avent Natural Response require active sucking to release milk. Their flow levels differ from other brands, and the nipple number doesn’t always correspond to your baby’s age or feeding ability. ⚖️ Why does this matter? Inefficient milk transfer can contribute to inadequate intake, feeding fatigue, and poor weight gain. 💛 The goal isn’t the fastest nipple. It’s the RIGHT flow for your baby. If your infant consistently takes longer than 30 minutes to finish a bottle, is struggling to feed, or isn’t gaining weight appropriately, talk with your pediatrician. A feeding assessment can help determine whether the nipple flow, feeding technique, or another issue is responsible.
