@.carolgiselle: Reading today was SO good!!! 🥹 My first graders are reading The Paper Crane and today we focused on the vocabulary word “unusual.” Vocabulary can be tricky for our little learners, especially when adding a prefix completely changes the meaning of a word! One thing I always try to do is make vocabulary relatable. We looked at a picture, discussed real life examples, and then students had the opportunity to turn and talk about something unusual they had experienced. And let me tell you, one of my students had the FUNNIEST story to share. 😂 What I loved most was that he completely understood the meaning of the word and was so excited to share his connection! I wanted to share this moment because I think sometimes we forget that learning can be rigorous AND fun. We can hold our students to high academic expectations while still making space for laughter, silly stories, and kids just being kids. These little moments are also how we build classroom culture. Students begin to associate learning with joy, feel comfortable sharing their ideas, and learn that their voices matter. Not every moment in our classroom needs to be so structured.
