The literacy crisis is about SO much more than sounding out tricky words. 📚 It’s about understanding the nuanced meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary, unpacking long, complex sentences, following arguments across entire texts, and interpreting information we encounter in everyday life. Think legal documents. Medical paperwork. Ballot amendments. Insurance policies. Contracts. Documents that shape our health, rights, and finances. And here’s what worries me most: these texts can be so complex and nuanced that people may not even realize when they haven’t fully understood what they’ve read. This is why the literacy crisis cannot be solved by focusing on phonics alone (even though if you've followed me a long time, you know I'm a proponent of explicit, complete phonics instruction). We need this alongside the oral language development, vocabulary, background knowledge, syntax, and critical thinking skills that allow children to make meaning from increasingly complex texts. And this "learning to read" doesn't just stop at the end of 2nd grade. We need to be continuing to review and delve deeper into these skills throughout school. This work also starts LONG before children learn to read. From birth, children's experiences with conversation, language, and the world around them contribute to the knowledge and language comprehension they will eventually bring to reading. There are lots of inequities here that we as a society, beyond just education, need to address (especially in the age of so much screen time) Literacy is a matter of access, autonomy, and justice. 💛 📚 SOURCES & FURTHER READING: • National Literacy Institute — adult literacy statistics • Lexile & Quantile Hub — Lexile levels and reading percentiles • Eltorai, Ghanian, et al.
