@healingwithchels: One of the hardest parts of healing from CPTSD is recognizing how deeply trauma has shaped the way I think, feel, react, and connect with others. These responses developed as ways to survive, but they don’t always recognize when the danger has passed. Even when I know I’m safe, my nervous system doesn’t always agree. Self-awareness has helped me understand why I respond the way I do, but understanding a trauma response and learning to change it are two very different things. What trauma response has been the hardest for you to unlearn?
I find myself shallow breathing and holding my breath. Then my chest hurts and I have to make myself take in full breaths. I’ve been out of the situation that I was in for 6 yrs but I am just now coming down from flight or fight I was a nervous wreck today and I realized there is no impending doom around the corner and I have a right to just be still and happy. My feelings are coming back to me in real time and that’s scary to me
