You 100% need money though. This is why people say it costs atleast $1.5 million now to make it in the industry. Ita just a sad fact

Veteran publicist from JNFE Public Relations here. This is my take:
The relevance of major record labels in 2026 is an illusion built on legacy infrastructure that no longer matches how culture is consumed. Historically, labels held absolute power because they controlled the exclusive choke points of the industry. They managed direct relationships with traditional media to dictate the narrative, leveraged deep corporate ties to secure late night television performance slots, and partnered with massive promoters like Live Nation to lock down high capacity venues.
Furthermore, they used sophisticated advertising tricks to secure full rotation radio play and manipulated award shows alongside chart compilers to artificially inflate the appeal and commercial dominance of the masters they owned.
The true superpower of the major label was never just financial backing. It was their ability to execute this coordinated machinery simultaneously across multiple global territories, using psychological repetition to manufacture an oversized sense of worldwide popularity.
Today, that entire gatekeeper model is obsolete. The nature of fame itself has fundamentally shifted, as modern creators and audiences reject the exhausting tier of mega celebrity once manufactured and protected by corporate boards. With celebrity worship waning and direct to consumer digital ecosystems thriving, artists no longer need the institutional leverage of a major label to build a sustainable, highly lucrative career on their own terms.

Some sign and get nowhere. Some sign and become very rich and famous. Some do better with a label. Some without. No blanket rules. Kendrick Lamar isn't sitting in his mansion wishing he never signed a deal because it's the worst thing to happen to him. But maybe some unknown years before him did sign and make no money

: Yeah, but if you don’t have a marketing budget out of your own bank account, nobody’s gonna hear it. If you cannot afford YouTube marketing campaigns and Facebook, marketing campaigns, etc. your music is not going to be heard by anybody more than your friends on your Facebook list . So if you gotta do it by yourself, that’s fine but you better find some money somewhere to invest in marketing because that is the key.

The only problem us independent artists have is exposure. It’s impossible to stand out with the amount of new music and now AI music being released daily.

This is wonderful advice, thank you!Now my question would be, if you don’t have the mastering skills, then what can you do and how can you release your music without spending a boat load of money on a producer?

Signed under an imprint label under republic/universal record Avery and Monty themselves. Dropped I think under a year. Sold a decent 75,000 records. Toward a bunch with Godsmack/drowning pool/rock festivals across the country. We even have a gold record with a Collab song with Godsmack on the acoustic record called touché. Still dropped. In fact, we were dropped with several other rock bands that year on universal. Crazy business.

Are major record labels changing a little being that more artists are releasing their own music and succeeding?

I almost signed with a major label in the early 90s. I had a friend signed to the same label - he told me not to sign for this reason. I read an interview with our A&R guy and he talked about those years - said it would have been nearly impossible for a band to succeed under the terms and none that he signed did. My friend’s career never recovered because of recoupment. He was stuck. I didn’t sign. It ended my music career but in a much better way.
