This video comes across like you are not fully thinking ending the filibuster through. Supporting the ending of the filibuster is fine. I personally agree with ending the filibuster, but calling it “cowardice” for senators to support keeping makes it seem like you are glossing over the fact that ending the filibuster will also mean the republicans will be able to do the same thing. Both parties holding future trifecta’s is not a possibility, it is a guarantee. If the democrats end the filibuster to pass legislation they want, it WILL mean that a future republican senate will be able to undo it all and pass their own replacement legislation. You aren’t just giving your party the ability to pass legislation with a simple majority, you are also giving the opposing party the same ability. It goes both ways. Saying filibuster supporters are cowards because they don’t agree with you is a very entitled and arrogant thing to say.

Serious question - but isn’t there a threshold to overcome a presidential veto?

Senate is already too powerful and over represents small states so this is a good check

But if we make it possible to do things, the other side might do things when they win elections! Plus tbh that all sounds like a lot of work...

It’s a bit of a naive approach. If you eliminate the filibuster, which can be done with a majority, you eliminate it for everyone. This was the tool used to keep the current admin from ending social programs, it’s how democrats stopped funding of the wall in the first administration. This knife cuts both directions, there are risks to remove it

Yes simple to pass but what about keep? Eventually if something like universal healthcare is passed, it will need to be re authorized.

What you're saying isn't completely wrong, but some of us live in Southern states where the best that we can get for a Democrat, if they get elected, is a liberal conservative. And there's plenty of folks in blue states that are the same. So, the political will of the elected officials currently there probably won't be there to get rid of the filibuster. Best we can do is every primary season and election. we try to boot out the corpos but that won't be this election and probably not the next one

The filibuster is around because government is intended to move slowly. It’s another aspect of the senate’s pragmatism. That’s also why only 1/3 of senators are up for reelection each cycle… I want many of the policies you mentioned but I also don’t want massive changes every time a party comes into power or a movement gains temporary popularity

You & I probably agree on 98% of our politics but this is where I got as disagree, respectfully. Had you asked me in 2020, I fully supported abolishing the filibuster. But if you ask me now, under a second Trump term, I’d tell you I’m glad Republicans couldn’t pass everything they wanted.
