She’s technically from the Himalayas but she’s obviously Russian coded because 1) she has a heavy Russian accent 2) she’s wearing Russian clothes (like the hat for example) 3) when she appeared on screen for the first time, there was Russian music playing in the background 4) she acts like the stereotype of Russian women. The stereotype is that Russian women are emotionally cold and blunt and tough. 5) there are characters that are technically from one place, but they’re coded as something else. Like Darwin from TAWOG is black-coded but he’s technically from a pond and he’s a fish.

g1 had good intentions but it repeatedly misrepresented cultures so i don’t understand why people are acting like the creators intended for her to be fully russian. this was obviously a decision made out of laziness and/or lack of care for properly representing a southeast asian person. i adore g1 and i grew up on it, but my love for it doesn’t negate the fact that it wasn’t always respectful of other cultures

It’s kinda up in the air. You can be born somewhere without that being your ethnicity but you can also pick up accents based on who taught you a language. I like the happy medium where she’s mixed and one of her parents was from the Russian mountains, met a yetti from the Himalayas and settled down there and started a family, and that’s who taught her English. She has her cousin Marisol and another cousin from a throw away bit where another Yetti growls at them and she says it’s a distant cousin from another country so clearly Yetis/Sasquatch get around

As someone who is half Russian, growing up I thought she was so cool. Especially since 90% of the time Russians are portrayed as the bad guys in media. She was tough and cold but she was also strong as hell and loyal.
