My favorite phrase to use is “what do you mean by that?” in a genuinely curious tone.

What if they confirm that they did mean it to be rude? I’ve had a similar situation and I just ignore people when I don’t want to be bothered or know what to say. Corporate has been mentally exhausting for me

As someone who is autistic and often comes across as rude when I do not mean to, I LOVE when people ask me so I can correct it. This is fantastic.

Any recommendations for how to respond to a rude, especially passive aggressive comments in writing? I tend to second guess if I'm reading into tone over email or just getting defensive. I also don't want to set a precedent for letting people let off steam by sending me emotionally-charged emails.

What if they put it back on you, "What part of my speech made you feel like I was being rude to you?"

In my workplace, people feel free to say rude things in emails. So it's hard to engage and address. After the email, they won't answer a phone call. I'm remote.

Darryl did this on The Office! Michael was much more off base and definitely rude.

I don’t respond whatsoever and remain silent then when they ask me if they heard them I say “I’m really struggling with the way you said that and I’m trying to regroup, give me just a moment.” The calm of it is pretty effective and it also is true - I need to take a beat to be present because my anger response is pretty strong to that kind of behavior. It’s pretty effective but it can be intimidating, which I don’t mean to be.

I just tell them not to be a dickhead and that seems to work. I live in Philly though so might be a cultural thing. Also, does anyone ever intentionally try to be rude? I’d be pissed at you if you asked me if my intention was to be rude - I’d read it as disingenuous and would much prefer you to just say “that was rude” - that’s just my perspective.

Call it out the first time, or it will become a pattern. Nip it in the bud. I like the phrase you offered. I’m going to incorporate that. 🤔

Any ideas for how to handle behavior that is rude but not openly rude? Like not doing work and handing it off to someone else to complete

Can you give some examples of the rude comments you receive? I feel like I tolerate way too much at work but am concerned about being overly sensitive. Would help to get perspective on what others consider rude enough to address.
