When I was poor In college I asked my parents for a gift card to the grocery store. Instead I got a blender and a cookbook.

Reminder: “it’s the thought that counts” is only true in situations when there was actual thought

My ex did this as a power play. One year she asked me if I wanted a new beard trimmer. No, the one I had I’d spent a lot on years before I met her, it was heavy, metal body, quiet, high quality thing. I said no. Christmas Day there’s this $30 braun plastic POS with a million attachments no one ever uses. And she’d thrown out my old one that I’d spent $150 on 20 years earlier. A reason to start a fight.

This is why I get myself everything I need. I grew up poor and now as an adult, I don’t wait till my birthday to ask for things I go out and I get what I need. I don’t really spend a lot on myself on getting extras. If someone asked what I want, I would rather spend a day going somewhere with them. One year for my birthday I took my family to the zoo. Another year we went to a restaurant on the Kentucky river and watched live performance of some bands. I like. You can’t get disappointed if you don’t expect anything from anyone.

She could’ve bought the book & made bookmarks. BUT he should just start returning the favor

Why would you expect gratitude for something they never asked for and they didn’t need or want…

NTA. She is way more concerned about what she wants to do than what people actually want.

NTA. It was not an expensive, extensive, or extravagant gift. It was a book. He asked for one book explicitly and was given a book related accessory meaning she heard loud and clear his birthday wish so the fact that it's a bookmark (and not to accompany said book) is almost more offensive

ESH- neither person seems to have communicated how to compromise with each other. Both of their opinions are valid but there are so many solutions they could discuss. Like: maybe double gift from her to him one bought & one handmade (maybe she sees more value in handmade/thought out gifts). Has he even asked her if she’d like something handmade too? lol

I feel like she’s f-ing with him at this point bc he asked for a book and to please not give him a homemade anything and she MADE HIM **BOOK MARKERS** lol that has to be on purpose.

My mom is the same way. She’s far more concerned with gifting people stuff that SHE feels good about giving rather than what the person actually wants. :/ I’ve tried making lists and instead of buying from it 90% of the time she gets something completely unrelated or only vaguely similar.

He IS the a**hole for marrying her to begin with. People don't have to propose marriage, and people don't have to accept a proposal of marriage. If asking or accepting feels in any way obligatory, then the answer should be a big fat "NO". It's silly to already know what someone is like, then still complain about it after being married.

Just stop telling her what you want and buy the things that you want or need to have yourself.

As someone who loves giving home made gifts… give them as random surprises. Birthdays and they like listen to what the person wants. Knitted mittens are a “just because I wanted to make you something” gift

She really could have done both, got the book and make him bookmarks to use with it. The fact she didn't even try to find or make the type that he prefers just drives the point that she doesn't care what he wants only what she wants to give

Whats her problem... Why ask him what he wants if she's just going to get him something else instead. Shes obviously getting these things for herself

I am on the other side of this. My husband has gotten me absolute garbage for gifts for TEN YEARS. So last year I said, DO NOT BUY ME ANYTHING. Not for my birthday, not for Christmas, not for our anniversary. I will either get myself what I want or explicitly tell him what I want. If you can't get someone something you 100% know they actually want, then don't bother. OP is NTA

NTA maybe alittle lean towards everyone's sucks. The comment about they aren't even book marks I like seem a bit over the top. That being said I completely see where you are coming from. IDK she is just not wanting to spend alot or genuinely love making gifts. If she just enjoys making things it would have been great if she got you the book and gave you the bookmarks she made. I think that it was really a last straw for you since you have talked to her about it multiple times.

But you could take the crappy gift and go out and get what you want yourself too.

“She makes less than me” makes me believe you don’t have joint accounts and you’re responsible for your “own bills”. If that’s the case then you get what you get. If that’s not the case, what kind of financial abuse has this wife experience to where she can’t buy an item you requested with “family money”?

This is manipulation at its finest. Because honestly, who gets mad that their spouse spent all that time to MAKE something special instead of some gift bought at a big box store, made in China piece of garbage? She 💯 does not care about what her wants, she gets off on not doing it, but her gifts are “ so thoughtful and special” most people think he’s an AH when he’s not grateful.

nta. you have tried so many times to communicate with her, she obviously doesn't care and doesn't want to hear what you want. an occasional home made trinket is fine, but, when you made it super easy for her to get you what you wanted and she still ignored it. I suggest couples therapy
