From 1 in 42 boys when CJ was diagnosed in 2014 to approximately 1 in 20 boys in the latest CDC report. Twelve years into our family’s autism journey, that change deserves attention. CJ was diagnosed on August 13, 2014. These numbers have never been just statistics to me. They represent people like my son—and families trying to understand their needs and find support. For clarity, we’re comparing reports published in 2014 and 2025, based on 2010 and 2022 data—a 12-year span between the data years. Both studied autism identified among 8-year-olds in monitored communities, with differences in locations and methods. Greater awareness and improvements in identification have helped more autistic people be recognized. Earlier identification can connect children with support sooner. But these figures alone cannot explain the entire increase. What they do make clear is the need to turn awareness into action. Accessible evaluations. Support that meets individual needs. Classrooms and workplaces that make room for us. Communities that refuse to excuse bullying. As an autistic mother raising an autistic son, I want people to understand that behind every number is a person with strengths, needs, and a future worth investing in. Knowing the statistics means little if we still dismiss someone’s needs or make them fight to be included. Learn the facts. Challenge the ridicule. Put acceptance into practice. Our dignity should never be up for debate. 💙 DM me your state and the type of support you’re looking for, and I’ll help you find autism resources.
