She contracted Ramsay Hunt Syndrome in December 2012 following the death of her husband, former NDP leader, The Honourable Jack Layton. Ramsay Hunt syndrome (also known as herpes zoster oticus) is a rare neurological condition caused by the reactivation of the varicella-zoster virus. It affects the facial nerve (cranial nerve VII) near the inner ear, leading to facial paralysis and a painful shingles rash. Although she has largely recovered Olivia Chow has said the nerves in her face never fully restored themselves leaving her with lifelong facial paralysis. I find it truly disgusting the ableist comments that get thrown her way and how comfortable people seem to be making fun of her disability. Hopefully this is a lesson to think before you speak.
