So many people were quick to tell me to rescue this dog. But I think it’s important to have an honest conversation about what rescue actually looks like. As heartbreaking as it sounds, there are situations where euthanasia may genuinely be the kinder option. Is the life these dogs are living better than that? That’s a question people will have different opinions on, but there isn’t always a happy ending, and simply keeping a dog alive doesn’t necessarily mean giving it a good life. My priority will always be my three dogs. That might sound selfish or cruel to some people, but they are everything to me, and I’ve already sacrificed so much to give them the life they deserve. However, seeing how this lady and her son live was a different level of heartbreak. Here is somebody who has given practically everything to these dogs, somebody who struggles to turn even one dog away, and yet look at the conditions she is living in herself. Nobody deserves to live like that. I don’t want a penny back from what I spent helping this dog yesterday. My intention was to show people what rescue can actually look like behind the scenes. Not the pretty pictures, not the feel-good stories, but the reality of somebody taking in dog after dog when they simply don’t have the resources to provide everything those animals need. I worry that without help, things will only get worse. For the dogs, for this lady, and for her son. She spends practically every waking hour caring for them, cleaning up after them and trying to make ends meet. At what point do we stop and ask who’s looking after the person doing all the rescuing? There isn’t always a good outcome. There isn’t always a solution where every dog gets a wonderful home. Sometimes we have to acknowledge that. But we can at least try to help the people who have given so much of themselves to these animals.
