@brighamofutah: Utah was once dotted with plots of land intended by Euro-American who recently immigrated to the area to teach Utah’s native people to farm like them. The Spanish Fork Indian Farm once stretched from the 7300 South in Leland to the Spanish Fork River to Utah Lake, with Indian Agent and doctor Garland Hurt’s offices on the southeastern side. The precise degree of peril to Hurt during the Utah War is far from clear. The Mormon population was understandably tense as U.S. Army soldiers were moving in with a poorly-communicated purpose, and beyond the victims at Mountain Meadows, other people (such as the Aiken party) had already been threatened or even terminated under suspicions of being federal agents. Mormon leader and territorial governor Brigham Young, however, who had sent the militia troops to the Indian farm, would mock Hurt for his speedy flight on an “unsafe and highly improper” route and claimed to have been intending to offer him a more comfortable carriage out of the territory. #utahadventures #learnhistoryontiktok #TikTokLearningCampaign #learnontiktok #americanhistory
