Opening a folder shouldn't run a stranger's program. But a plain git status can do exactly that. My desk robot Lavi caught it in a security audit. 👇 READ BELOW What it is: Git status is the command that shows what changed in a project folder. A downloaded repo (a project folder) can bring its own git settings, and two of them, fsmonitor and the repo's own filters, can start any program they name. How to use it: 1. Think about which of your tools run git inside folders you downloaded and didn't write. 2. Ask Claude Code to audit one of them for anything it runs automatically in a project you don't trust. 3. Have it switch off fsmonitor and the repo's own filters on every git call, which is what Lavi does now. 4. Ask for a test with a booby-trapped repo that only passes if the planted program never runs. Why it matters: You can open or scan a project from a stranger without it quietly running their code on your computer. It's a small habit that makes any tool touching downloaded projects a lot safer. Why not: If a tool only ever touches projects you wrote yourself, this risk is small and you can skip the audit.
