@marc_sallinger: These are the three most interesting stories I'm following today, October 22. 1. Starting Nov. 1 and running through February, CDOT and Colorado State Patrol can detour eastbound I-70 at Floyd Hill from sunrise to 8:30 a.m. when the low morning sun creates blinding glare. Drivers exit at the bottom of Floyd Hill and take US 6 through Clear Creek Canyon or the US 40 frontage road back to I-70 at Beaver Brook. Expect delays of up to an hour. 2. Denver Public Schools enrollment fell by 1,780 students this fall, compared with about 1,200 last fall. The district had projected a drop of 1,400 to 1,500. The district points to lower birth rates, high housing prices and fewer immigrant students: 233 new immigrant students enrolled in the first five weeks, compared with more than 1,470 in fall 2023. Enrollment peaked in 2019, and DPS has closed or partially closed 13 schools in the past three years. A four-year moratorium bars closure votes before 2029, but it allows exceptions for a "substantial shift" in enrollment. Great reporting by @chalkbeatco. 3. Great Sand Dunes geologist Andrew Valdez measures the park's biggest dunes every year. Star Dune is now approaching 720 feet, down almost 40 feet from 2000. That’s according to The Gazette. Valdez suspects grasses and shrubs are blocking sand from reaching the dunes, but as he put it: "Basically, it seems kind of random at this point." #FloydHill #DenverPublicSchools #GreatSandDunes #colorado

The Floyd hill sunrise glare is insane you just have to experience it to understand

As someone who has experienced that sun glare. Yes it’s smart to plan for it. Sunglasses do not help

Of for heavens sake, why do we have to keep hearing about “low birth rates” when referring to one of the most overpopulated, invasive species? We don’t need to make more humans. It only makes us more disposable to the ultra-wealthy & powerful anyways.

Re: DPS, I can tell you that I know lots of people (myself included) who sent kids to private schools this year due to DPS chaos and discipline issues. Even the mayor doesn’t send his kids to DPS schools.

I’m surprised to hear CDOT suddenly cares about glare considering that horrific gold building near the Colorado exit/entrance of I-25 that literally burns my freaking corneas every time I pass it and leaves purple spots for minutes after regardless of the visor/sunglasses combo I use

I use to think it was nonsense UNTIL that sun hit me and I couldn’t see ANYTHING. Visor doesn’t work, sunglasses nope. Wait it out works

The glare has always been like that. I had an accident there because of it back in the late 90s

dunes shrinking seems to indicate the sand is spreading, more desertification.

they didn't detour 225 in front of cherry creek dam, and that was truly blinding, why do they care now?

I wish you would report good news of smaller class size, rather than more school closures. It's ridiculous they close the schools.

There was once a pitch for ‘planetary sunshade’ by the Planetary Sunshade Foundation. Guess they couldn’t come up with the billions of taxpayer dollars it would cost
