@laistofficial: Proposition 37 would create a state loan program to help middle-income Californians buy newly built homes and condos. The California Housing Finance Agency could borrow up to $25 billion, though it wouldn’t be required to, and lend it to homebuyers to cover part of their down payment. A coalition of real estate interests and labor unions placed this measure on the ballot. 🔗 Head to LAist.com/Vote for more guides. 💪 Be part of keeping local news strong: LAist.com/Donate 🎥 Jill Replogle, Tony Federico, Michael Leyva, Joshua Letona
The way I see this. More people will be able to buy a house. Those people in most cases are buying a property are higher price than the seller which means that the property taxes that the county is collecting is higher. Isn’t that going to help the state overall more revenue?

If you give people money but don’t increase supply, all it will do is push prices higher.

This is how you make a bad situation worse. This type of scheme incentivizes overextension of those least able to bear any changes in market conditions and will worsen the effects of a downturn.

We can’t get to affordable housing by propping up demand. I’m no PhD but increasing people’s ability to buy something seems like a policy that will help those who already own that thing more than the people with new levels of debt for that thing. Build more housing. End prop 13.

Why is this a bad investment? We subsidize corporations, banks and corporate farms which fail all the time? Why is housing poor people an issue?
