@fox12oregon: The Oregon Department of Justice says it has been directed by the White House to prioritize prosecuting cases of SNAP fraud. Since October 2024, the federal government says more than $3 million in food assistance funds has been stolen in Oregon, and officials have filed nearly a dozen new indictments. More than 700,000 people in Oregon rely on SNAP benefits, according to federal data. That accounts for 18% of the state population. Devices used to steal benefit data have been found at convenience and grocery stores across the state. Department of Justice attorney Scott Bradford said it is easy to target EBT cards because Oregon’s cards are not chipped. Participants could swipe their cards, have their data stolen, and find a zero balance the next time they go shopping. In the past two months, Bradford said the DOJ has filed 11 new indictments for $143,000 in stolen EBT funds. The funds were used to buy baby formula and energy drinks that are sold for cash on the black market.
