Timoji, a Hindu privateer, urged him to take Goa from the sultan of Bijapur. The city gave up without a fight on 17 February. In May the sultan, Ismail Adil Shah, came back with an army. The Portuguese abandoned Goa on the night of 30 May, and the monsoon kept the fleet in the Mandovi River for 11 weeks. It got out on 15 August. At Cannanore new ships from Portugal brought it to 34. On 25 November Albuquerque stormed Goa and took it in a day. It stayed Portuguese until 1961. In April 1511 he sailed for Malacca with 18 ships and about 1,000 men, the Flor in the lead. Malacca's sultan, Mahmud Shah, held Portuguese prisoners. A first assault on 25 July failed. The city fell on 24 August. Leaving a fort and a garrison, Albuquerque sailed for India in the Flor, loaded with the sultan's treasure and the king of Siam's gifts. With her were the Trindade, the Enxobregas, and a captured junk. Off the coast of Sumatra, at night, a storm drove the Flor onto shoals and she broke in two. Albuquerque got to the Trindade on a raft. The men left on the wreck were taken off on a second raft. The Javanese aboard the junk killed its Portuguese crew and sailed away. The Trindade crossed by Ceylon and reached Cochin in January 1512. Why it matters: Goa and Malacca were Portugal's chief ports in Asia for more than a century.
