Q.S Al-Baqarah Ayat 255 (Ayat Kursi) Syeikh Abdurrahman as-Sudais #AlQuran
This month on Patreon I shared how I strategize a large plein air painting during the fleeting golden hour light. This was painted last October, and I just loved the scene, as it reminded me of one of my favorite paintings - Rye, by Ivan Shishkin. Some of the topics in this tutorial include: Light strategy - I started this painting with the sun at my back, and fast moving shadows in the foreground. I focused on painting the foreground first to capture the fast moving shadow, and saved the sky for later Working Larger - This was a larger painting than what I usually share. Outdoors, sometimes I use a touch of solvent to really extend the paint and cover fast. Fat over Lean - Working with thinner at the start is a classic way to work with the fat over lean rule. I save my palette cup of oil for later, the oil sits on top of the solvent and lets me layer while the paint isn’t completely dry Using a White Tone - There are pros and cons to working on a white surface. The main pro is that color can be keyed purer and lighter, especially when using thinned paint. The main downside is to avoid washing out the colors by judging against the white of your canvas. While the colors may look dark at the start, you’ll see how by the end they fell into place Making Marks that Creating Depth - The way I was applying my marks varied depending on whether I was painting something in the foreground, middle ground, or background. Small decisions add up to a big effect! Secret Softening Brush - One of the key tools for this piece was a big squirrel mop brush. With the smooth canvas, it helped me knock down some of the brush marks in the the sky; eliminating glare, softening edges, capturing the soft ethereal feeling of clouds and air, and ultimately pushing the variety in my mark making for the entire painting As this was a larger painting, there was still work to be done. You will see how I take this painting and finish it indoors in next month's video. For anyone that would like to try to follow along, a still reference and image of the painting are attached at the bottom of the post on Patreon. Link in bio to watch the full video, and many more!
