Untold Stories of Ethiopian Migrants on the Dangerous Journey to South Africa NAIROBI, Kenya — For thousands of Ethiopians, the journey to South Africa is more than a search for economic opportunity. It is often a difficult decision driven by unemployment, poverty, limited livelihoods, family responsibilities, pressure on agricultural land, insecurity and the hope of creating a more secure future. The journey along the Southern Migration Route can take migrants through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Mozambique, Zambia and Zimbabwe before they reach South Africa. Along the way, migrants may encounter dangerous travel conditions, exploitation, robbery, detention, violence and trafficking. Many become dependent on smugglers or informal migration networks to navigate unfamiliar borders and territories. Behind the growing migration figures are thousands of individual stories — many of which remain largely unheard. Why Are Ethiopians Leaving? Unemployment and limited economic opportunities A lack of stable employment remains an important factor influencing migration decisions among young Ethiopians. For some, completing secondary school, vocational training or university does not guarantee access to a job capable of providing a sustainable income. Young people who are unable to support themselves or contribute to their families may begin to view migration as one of the few available options. In communities where employment opportunities are limited, the possibility of earning more abroad can become particularly attractive. Rural poverty and pressure on land For many Ethiopian families, agriculture remains central to household livelihoods. But population growth, land fragmentation, environmental pressures and limited employment outside agriculture can make it increasingly difficult for young people to establish independent livelihoods. For a young person living in a rural community, a small family farm may not provide enough income to support a growing household or build a sustainable future. That pressure can contribute to decisions to seek opportunities elsewhere. The Attraction of South Africa The established Ethiopian community in South Africa also plays a role in shaping migration aspirations. Stories of Ethiopians who have opened businesses, found employment, established shops or improved their families’ living conditions can create powerful expectations among people considering the journey. Diaspora networks may provide information, financial assistance, accommodation and connections to employment. But there can be a significant gap between the success stories people hear before leaving and the realities experienced by migrants along the route. For every story of someone who succeeds, there may be others who experience exploitation, trafficking, detention, robbery, violence, deportation or financial loss. Many of those stories receive little public attention. The Untold Journey Behind every migration statistic is a human being with a family, expectations and a reason for leaving home. Some migrants begin their journey believing they will reach South Africa within a relatively short period. Instead, they may spend weeks or months travelling through several countries. Some run out of money along the way. Others may be abandoned by smugglers or intermediaries. Some report robbery, physical abuse, exploitation or detention. Women and girls can face additional risks, including sexual and gender-based violence. The absence of reliable protection and assistance in parts of the Southern Migration Route can leave migrants particularly vulnerable. For some, reaching South Africa is not the end of the journey’s difficulties. Life After Arrival in South Africa South Africa remains an important destination for migrants seeking employment and economic opportunities. However, migrants without valid documentation can face significant challenges. These may include difficulties accessing formal employment and services, immigration enforcement, detention, deportation, discriminati
