@occonews: Australian independent federal MP Helen Haines has had both legs amputated after being struck by a vehicle outside her electorate office. Her husband, Phil, confirmed the news to reporters at The Alfred hospital in Melbourne on October 21. Haines’ left leg was amputated on Monday. Her husband said the family had hoped doctors could save her right leg, but surgeons also had to remove it. “But the good news in all this is Helen is alive and she’s stable,” he said. “We are grateful and thankful that, at this stage, both her heart and her mind are in good shape.” The 65-year-old lawmaker was struck by a Toyota LandCruiser outside her office in Wangaratta, Victoria, on October 19 and airlifted to Melbourne for treatment. Police allege the attack was deliberate, but say the motive remains under investigation. Brendan Nugent, 43, has been charged with dangerous driving causing serious injury, intentionally causing serious injury, and causing harm to a Commonwealth public official. He appeared in court on October 21 and remains in custody after making no application for bail. The couple are just weeks away from their 40th wedding anniversary. Phil said his wife faces a long and difficult recovery, but described her as a fighter who would have her family’s love and support.
