I wonder if this is related to why it’s considered an honor to stand (from one’s chair) when someone enters a room

Physical items were of such value back then. We take it for granted now how much stuff we have.

Bill Bryson wrote an incredible book called At Home and he goes into this. Also tables were just boards that would be placed across laps, so the term “room and board” referring to a place to sleep and food comes from the board you would eat off of.

Stools and benches were what most commoners would sit on rather than the floor, unless you're going back a reeeaaaly long time

That’s so interesting, is that why a throne is such a power symbol in royalty? 🫅🪑

Here's another thing almost no one's heard of: the What-is-a-chair fallacy. I also call it the What-time-is-midday fallacy. It's when you confuse definition with description. Defining something is different to observing and describing it. Nothing is entirely what you define it to be, except maybe mathematical terms.

Probably more a cultural norm than anything. They told US military members the same thing about Japanese people in yhe second world war. Because of yhe cultural norm of them sleeping on the floor they were supposedly in abject poverty when it wasn't really true.

In comparison to Europe, in Japan and Korea chairs were extremely rare well into the 19th century

Sofa is a relative newcomer in western rooms. So are curtains on windows, late victorians really adopted them in common usage. Pillows? Cushions? Also not as old and common as people think. Comfort is a really surprisingly late idea in western home. Warm home? Where in eastern Europe it was common to have huge central heating structure that retained heat for hours, in western Europe forever popular solution is an open faced fireplace that is attached to the outer wall, radiating great chunk of that warmth to outside, retains no heat at all and needs constant attention. it fascinating how what is 'obvious' is not at all that in practice.

Stick with me… My apartment in on the raised ground floor, it overlooks the dumpsters, a paved driveway and a carpark. Lots of shades of beige, and grey. However, trees are layered between the concrete jungle, and there is a beautiful old wall that form an end of a row of town houses. I got a low table and low chairs (think south East Asian street cafe culture). I now have a beautiful view of the sky and layered scenery that changes with the seasons, before just trunks where in my line of sight, now the urban landscape is framed by a massive stone wall. It’s all about perspective. When I had normal “chairs” and table by the kitchen window, We dined as people emptied trash in front of us, in the selection of coloured, but grimy trash containers, and aesthetically unpleasing parking solutions with unkept shrubs and harsh white led courtesy lighting. I have much respect for the Borat character, as he was constantly looking up to people, the stars and broadening his horizons, rather than how Sasha Barron-Cohen made a career by looking down on other peoples cultures.
