@capitollytv: On Oct. 16, an anonymous X account called LibertysBelle posted a tally of mothers who had killed their own children "since Lindsay Clancy." It gave no start date and no list of cases, and said it counted "just the ones that made the local news." Two days later, Rep. Nancy Mace, a South Carolina Republican, posted the same figures: "Since Lindsay Clancy's trial 82 mothers have killed 123 of their children." Her post did not say where the numbers came from. It has been viewed more than a million times. Clancy, 36, a former labor and delivery nurse from Duxbury, Massachusetts, is charged with murder in the January 2023 deaths of her three children, who were 5, 3 and 8 months old. She pleaded not guilty, and her lawyers argued she had severe postpartum psychosis. Her trial began in July. On Sept. 4, the judge declared a mistrial after 11 jurors favored finding her not guilty by reason of insanity and one held out for a conviction. Prosecutors have not decided whether to try her again. In September, Mace wrote that Clancy "deserves the death penalty. Make it public." Massachusetts does not have the death penalty. A study of FBI arrest data from 1976 to 2007 found about 500 cases a year in the U.S. in which a parent was arrested for killing a child. The mother was the suspect in about 43% of them, or roughly 200 a year.
