Venera 13 Video Footage Of Venus - 1982 The Soviet Union sent Venera 13 and Venera 14 to Venus. They launched in late 1981 and reached Venus in March 1982. Venera 13 landed on March 1, followed by Venera 14 on March 5. Venera 13 is the one people usually mean when they talk about the famous "Venus footage." It transmitted the first colour photographs from the surface of another planet. The cameras mechanically scanned the surroundings and transmitted the data back through the spacecraft in orbit. What you're actually seeing The strange orange/yellow landscape isn't necessarily what Venus would look like to a human standing there. Venus has an extremely dense atmosphere, and only a tiny fraction of sunlight reaches the surface. The atmosphere strongly filters the blue wavelengths, giving the scene its characteristic orange/brown appearance. The really crazy part! Venera 13 was expected to have a very short life because Venus's surface is brutal: ~465°C (869°F) ~90 times Earth's atmospheric pressure Yet Venera 13 survived for approximately 127 minutes and transmitted multiple panoramas and scientific measurements before succumbing to the environment. It also transmitted recordings of sounds from the surface, including the wind and mechanical events associated with the lander. So when you see those grainy orange images online, you're essentially looking at a genuine photograph of another planet's surface taken 44 years ago and remarkably, Venera 13 and 14 remain the source of the only colour surface views we've obtained of Venus. video credited to @CosmoMystery #venus #planets #venera13 #1982 #spacetok
