Blackness is one of the most misunderstood identities in the world, mostly because people mix up race, ethnicity, and nationality. Race is a social construct. It was built during the colonial era to justify slavery, colonization, and the genocide of Indigenous people. Historian Barbara Fields argues race was the product of slavery, not the cause of it. And it has no biological backbone: geneticist Richard Lewontin showed in 1972 that most human genetic variation exists within so-called racial groups, not between them. Africa is the birthplace of our species and the most genetically diverse place on earth. A landmark 2009 study in Science led by Sarah Tishkoff traced Africans to 14 ancestral population clusters. So
Blackness is one of the most misunderstood identities in the world, mostly because people mix up race, ethnicity, and nationality. So "100% African DNA" isn't a real standard. Skin color tells you about the UV light your ancestors lived under (Nina Jablonski's work), not how related you are to anyone. In the Americas, we're a product of colonization and slavery. A 2015 study of over 150,000 people found the average African American is about 73% African, 24% European, and under 1% Native American. That's why Black Americans are a multigenerational mixed people. This is the same for Brazil, hairi, jamiaca, colombia and thr reagion Anthropologists Sidney Mintz and Richard Price describe how enslaved Africans from many nations forged a brand new culture here, a process called ethnogenesis. It's why Black in America is also ethnicity and culture, not just race. I have 16% European DNA, and I'm a Black man. My younger siblings are lightskinned. Same parents, no albinism. Light-skinned and mixed aren't the same thing: mixed means one Black parent and one white parent, while light-skinned is the by-product of centuries of mixing. The U.S. "one-drop rule" (see F. James Davis) is why America has always defined Blackness by ancestry. And the idea that Africans all look one way? That's colonial propaganda. I saw the range of phenotypes in South Africa and Nigeria myself. One thing a biracial person can never do is tell Black people we aren't Black using eugenics talking points. Haitian anthropologist Anténor Firmin took those arguments apart in 1885. Black is beautiful, and there's nothing else I'd rather be. Stay Black, stay blessed. 🖤 📚 Read more: • Racecraft, Barbara & Karen Fields • How to Argue with a Racist, Adam Rutherford • Superior, Angela Saini • Who Is Black?, F.
