Sickle cell anemia is an inherited blood disease. It stems from problems with hemoglobin, the oxygen carrier in the red blood cells.The hemoglobin forms strands inside the red blood cells, making them stiff and crescent shaped, rather than round and flexible. t The abnormal red cells can block blood flow and can result in weakness and chest and back pain.
