Imagine a person being over 60, found fit for work, though they have arthritis, is slow and unproductive through being ill, can’t sit /stand for two long, struggle yo use modern computers, have slow stiff fingers, can’t life much and give up driven, and they aren’t allowed to retire until they’re 67. And to make things worse, they’re competing with young people for shrinking pool of jobs - welcome to weird world of 2026 …

I run a small independent bar in Scotland. We posted an ad for part time bar staff on Indeed. In 48 hours, we had over 300 CVs. I dread to think how many applicants Asda/Tesco etc get. You’re not competing against other part timers/students. It’s 9-5ers looking for extra money. It’s brutal. We’ve now started employing people that NEED a job, not just people that want extra money.

The amount of recruiters who have reached out to me about a role with a job description of a salary of 'X' only to tell me on a call that the top end offer is less than advertised. I questioned a recruiter on it after it had happened a few times and she told me "thats normal in this industry. But really, we arent looking for someone focused on the salary".... im sorry what? you want people to work for fun? in this economy? not a chance.

HAPPENED TO ME 2 WEEKS AGO!!! I met every single requirement of the job INCLUDING: being a GRADUATE in my discipline, living in the same BOROUGH, having 1 year administrative experience, A N D speak GERMAN and English…. The job was made for me, I went through THREE interviews with the company AND and E X A M! all for them to get back to me 3 WEEKS later to say they can’t hire anyone for the role atm… cause of budgets… COULD THEY NOT FIGURE THIS OUT WHEN ADVERTISING THE ROLE? OR AT ANY POINT OF THE THREE interviews I passed?????

This is why we need Universal Basic Income. Everyone gets an amount each month and then if you can work / are able to find a job, it’s a bonus on top of your UBI (you don’t lose the money if you get a job). It also allows for people to work in lower paid jobs but still be able to live.

I was unemployed between January to June and those were the most brutal points of my life. I genuinely don’t know how I kept going but I just kept saying something will come and my heart will know if it’s right too. I did learn it does depend on when companies hire people as for me I had better luck from May as I guess new tax year for many 💗

2hrs before 2nd interview, weekend spent doing a project for the 2nd interview - job pulled. 10mins into my final interview for a different role, the job was given to someone internally. The market is so screwed up at the moment
