It's a bit stupid because they don't want to "humiliate" Russia. They want Russia to stop trying to conquer their neighbours because they'll be next. If you want peace it has to be mutual, if you're the only one and the other side actively pursues war, you'll always lose. The other issue is ww2 appeasement, seeing how so many people want to use it again on Putin it's a lot easier to imagine how it happened and that caused the deaths of far more than if Europe just stopped him before he did anything.
