@storynewdaily.789: Angel Reese promised she would respond after feeling she let Atlanta down in Game 1. She delivered one of the biggest performances of the WNBA Finals. Reese finished with 30 points and 16 rebounds as the Atlanta Dream defeated the Golden State Valkyries 79-65 in Game 2, tying the best-of-seven series at 1-1. It was also the first WNBA Finals victory in Dream franchise history. Reese had scored 14 points in Game 1 but went scoreless in the second half. Before Game 2, she said she needed to be more aggressive. This time, she stayed involved from beginning to end. Reese went 10-for-16 from the field and 9-for-11 at the free-throw line while adding three assists, two blocks and one steal. She became only the third player in WNBA history to record at least 30 points and 15 rebounds in a Finals game, joining Breanna Stewart and Jonquel Jones. Reese was also the youngest player ever to reach that mark. But Atlanta’s win was not only about its star forward. Allisha Gray added 18 points and five rebounds. Jordin Canada finished with 13 points and 10 assists, including a half-court basket at the end of the third quarter. Rhyne Howard struggled offensively but made history on defense with six steals — a WNBA Finals single-game record. Atlanta’s pressure created another major problem for Golden State. The Valkyries committed 19 turnovers, their highest total of the season, and the Dream turned those mistakes into 24 points. Golden State’s starting lineup struggled badly. Its five starters combined for only 32 points — just two more than Reese scored by herself. Gabby Williams led the Valkyries with 14 points but made only three of 15 attempts from the field. Golden State coach Natalie Nakase said her team was outworked and called many of the mistakes controllable. Atlanta also dominated at the free-throw line, making 30 of 35 attempts compared with Golden State’s 16 of 19. Neither team reached 35% from the field, showing just how defensive this Finals matchup has become. But after dropping Game 1, Reese and the Dream found exactly the response they needed. The series now moves to Atlanta tied at one game apiece.
