Got shoulder pain but still want to press? This is what I'm doing for that right now as I've got a bit of a tweak in my right shoulder than I'm training around while it heals up (nothing serious...dings happen, especially for me with my shoulders). I've found this to be a great tool in the toolbox for working around it (that being said, if you do get a shoulder injury, I recommend you see a doctor or PT). I've been training long enough to know when it's something I can heal up on my own or if it needs professional help. It's a Single Dumbbell Bench/Floor Press. It's an excellent method for hitting the chest with presses, especially if you have a bit of shoulder pain that might prevent you from doing full-range presses. To mimic the setup of the floor without lying on the floor, I've got my upper back on the bench perpendicular to the bench rather than set lengthwise down the bench as normal. This creates a wider surface that allows you to rest your upper arm on the bench in between reps. It shortens the range of motion (which is always the major criticism of the floor press) but it allows you to release the tension in the chest so you don't get elastic energy assistance out of the bottom. It also stops the movement in the more vulnerable portion of the exercise for the shoulder joint. In my case, right now if I go below this point, I get an tweak in my right shoulder. Staying above this point, no ache or pain, and I can still press with a decent amount of weight (95 lb dumbbell in the first part and 85 lb in the second). This setup also hits the core very strongly. It requires force transfer through the core muscles to stabilize the body and assist with the press, when you go heavy enough. I like to purposefully rotate my body towards the pressing arm to accentuate this torque. As a single-arm press in general, it basically takes away any chance of tipping off the bench and it allows you to press more for chest rather than being forced to keep the dumbbell in closer to prevent tipping, which becomes more tricep. --------------- Want a bigger chest?
