@staceyjadethevenin: Black people living in Ireland, what kind of racism or discrimination have you experienced here? Sometimes I feel less deserving of opportunities, benefits,or basic respect because of my skin colour. It’s often subtle, but the treatment feels different #ireland #africaninireland #irelandtiktok

I think if I started explaining every situation I’ve experienced, people would better understand where I’m coming from. One experience that has stayed with me happened when I was taking the bus with my little girl who was asleep in her buggy. The driver insisted that I fold the buggy, even though the buggy space was empty and there were plenty of seats available. He refused to move the bus until I complied. We sat there for over 10 minutes, and some passengers eventually got off to catch another bus. One passenger advised me to take the bus number and the driver’s name so I could report what happened. Unfortunately, my phone had died, so I couldn’t record anything. When I approached the driver and asked for his name, he refused to give it to me. Eventually, I decided to leave. As I was getting off, he whispered, “Fckg immigrant.” That was the part that hurt the most. I was simply a mother trying to get home with her sleeping baby. To make matters worse, the next bus already had two buggies on board, yet I was still able to find space for mine. This is why I sometimes question how I’m treated. It’s not about assuming every negative interaction is racism. It’s about experiencing situations where someone makes it very clear that they see you differently because you’re an immigrant. And sometimes, when you try to speak about these experiences, people dismiss you before even hearing the full story.

Maybe I didn’t make myself clear. I’m referring specifically to Child Benefit, based on a recent personal experience.

benefits are the issue. people are less bothered when you go out and EARN a living and contribute to the state. But arriving with the cap out, while Irish people struggle with rent and bills is a difficult pill to swallow. often times, people aren't against any race in particular. there isn't a sense of Irish superiority, or of anybody being less than an Irish person, there is a problem with the PERCIEVED Idea that people who have never contributed to the state in a meaningful way are BENEFITING from state supports unavailable to struggling Irish people. it isn't personal, or anything about your race or ethnicity. its the unfairness of this set up. we see it as racism in favour of you, you guys get preference. and we get nothing

as an Irish person, I can say that people coming into their country are very nice and lovely, but about 75% of them are not fit to work, theyre very problematic

The irony of these comments is astonishing. I asked Black people in Ireland about their experiences with racism, and some of you immediately jumped in to tell me I’m less deserving, that I should go back to Africa, and that I don’t deserve benefits. You’re literally demonstrating the very behaviour I was asking about. First of all, I’m Caribbean, not African. I work, pay taxes, and pay my rent. But here’s what you need to understand: My humanity and right to be treated with dignity are not conditional on how much money I contribute to this country. Nobody is denying that Irish people are struggling. But your housing crisis, high rents, and cost-of-living problems are not caused by the colour of my skin. And to those saying, “If you don’t like it, leave,” since when does living in a country mean you must silently accept discrimination? I never said all Irish people are racist. In fact, I’ve met wonderful Irish people. But some of you seem more offended by the discussion of racism than by racism itself. Here’s my question: If you genuinely believe racism doesn’t exist in Ireland, why is your first reaction to a Black woman sharing her experience to tell her she’s less deserving and should leave?
