🚨 JUSTICE FOR BUTTERCUP — WE WANT OUR GIRL HOME. 🚨 Buttercup was only three years old. She spent roughly a year inside the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter —waiting for someone to save her. We were trying. We were ready. And now Buttercup is dead. Gone Rogue Girls Rescue applied to become an approved rescue partner on April 3 specifically so we could bring Buttercup to safety. Our application went unanswered. Without contracted animal liaison Diane Madden stepping in and diligently helping us, our rescue application would never have been completed. Diane worked tirelessly to move the process forward while we jumped through every hoop, met every requirement and sent our trainer to meet and evaluate Buttercup. We fought through every obstacle because her life mattered. Buttercup was not rescue-only. She was not a bite case. She did not have dangerous or concerning behaviors. She was a young dog with a qualified rescue ready to take her. She should be safe with us today. Instead, she is lying in a crematorium. We are devastated—but we are also furious. The alleged diagnosis being presented does not answer our questions. This is not the first time serious concerns have been raised about TOHAS, its practices or the explanations surrounding animals in its care. This does not appear to be an isolated incident. It appears to be part of an ongoing pattern that must be independently investigated and stopped. Buttercup cannot tell us what happened, so we will be her voice. WE DEMAND: • Buttercup’s complete medical, veterinary and shelter records • All documentation supporting the alleged diagnosis being presented • An independent necropsy • The preservation of all records, surveillance footage, communications and evidence concerning Buttercup • The immediate release of her remains to our rescue so we can bring her home • A full investigation into the circumstances surrounding her death • A comprehensive operational and fiscal audit of TOHAS • The immediate resignation and permanent removal of Acting Director Ashley Behrens from shelter leadership Please call and email—respectfully, relentlessly and without threats: Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti: 📧 johnferretti@hempsteadny.gov 📞 516-489-5000 Town Attorney John Maccarone: 📧johnmac@hempsteadny.gov NYS Comptroller’s Hauppauge Regional Office: 📧Muni-Hauppauge@osc.ny.gov 📞 631-952-6534 Attention: Comptroller Thomas P. DiNapoli and Chief Examiner Ira McCracken 📞 Nassau County District Attorney - Anne Donnelly Animal Abuse and Neglect Tip Line: 516-571-7755 - then press 8 Main Office: 516-571-3800 Please request a formal investigation into Buttercup’s death and the broader pattern of concerns surrounding TOHAS. Ask that all medical records, surveillance footage, communications and other evidence involving Buttercup be preserved immediately. Where was the veterinary care? Where are her records? What evidence supports this alleged diagnosis? What happened to Buttercup—and why was a qualified rescue prevented from saving a three-year-old dog who had her entire life ahead of her? Buttercup waited long enough. She died before we could show her the life we had waiting for her—and that grief will remain with us forever. Gone Rogue Girls Rescue had been fighting to save Buttercup since April. Let that sink in: for months, we were ready and willing to bring her to safety. Now she is gone. The blood is on their hands. No one will rest until Acting Director Ashley Behrens is removed, until Town Supervisor John Ferretti takes meaningful action and implements real oversight at TOHAS, and until there is justice for Buttercup. Share this. Make the calls. Send the emails. Demand the truth. We want Buttercup home. We want answers. We demand accountability—and we will not stop. #JusticeForButtercup #BringButtercupHome #InvestigateTOHAS #AccountabilityNow @Ashley Nicole
