As a former teen who thought graduation money was like a windfall — it would be gone in a season with nothing to show. Placed somewhere it could grow, it was a beginning. Personal Finance for Teens — A. P. McMillan. Comment START + tap TikTok Shop. I want to help teens with Financial Literacy and Career Planning. Back in the day, we didn’t learn any of this unless you were born into a super wealthy family. Chances are, most of us were not. Parents can’t teach what they never learned themselves. Most schools don’t have this as part of the curriculum. As for me?? I was on my own in life as a teen at an age when I needed guidance the most. This has had lasting effects throughout adulthood. One example is student loans. Yes, I am part of the 40 million that depended on them. When I started college at 18 years old, I did it without the help of parents. I walked into the financial aid office without a clue of how any of it worked. As I stood in line with all the other students, one thing was absolutely clear. They all had their parents with them. Finally, it was my turn to be called. As I followed the financial aid person back to her cubical, I looked around and saw all the other cubical with parents and teens. Parents all taking notes and quite honestly, looking confused. Teens looking checked out. As I sat waiting for the moment to start taking notes myself, I quickly realized that wasn’t going to be my experience. Instead, the employee quickly stated a disclaimer and stated pointing to where I should sign. Literally stating a series of “sign here, sign here, sign here, etc”. I didn’t truly know what I was signing. I just knew whatever I was signing meant I can now go to college. Of course, those signatures then affected decades of my life. Going through life as a teen without any adult guidance gave me a unique perspective of the overwhelming gaps that needs to be filled on both topics of Financial Literacy and Career Planning for teens. As I even look back with my adult brain to that moment in the financial aid office, even the parents that were confused on the terms. And now as those same parents are starting to retire, they too are still shackled with student loan debt. After I graduated with both my MS and MBA, I was able to look back and see all of the costly errors that I made in my teens years both financially and during career planning. Not because I continuously chose the wrong path, but rather because I was never informed of the correct path for either topic. Now, as someone with multiple degrees in science and finance I was able to see the financial and career alternatives that would have prevented many of the mistakes that I had to learn the hard way and the long-term hardships those consequences caused. These experiences inspired me to create 2 books to help parents, grandparents, teachers, family members, mentors and teens to navigate this journey called Personal Finance for Teens and Career Planning for Teens by A. P, McMillan. Both books are available on Amazon. Additionally, Personal Finance for Teens is available on TikTok Shop. Career Planning for Teens link is available in my bio. Let’s help the next generation avoid the struggles we had at their age. #graduationtips #careerplanningforteens #personalfinanceforteens #amazondeals #backtoschool
