@outdoors_with_wd: I picked up this interesting John Primble India Steel Works a while back and decided I would do a little digging into the history of it. There's a pin crack on the front but its eat up with snap, the tang stamp is hardly legible but this is what I found with a Google search. This is definitely one to read about. Founding & Relocation: Established originally in Yalesville and Wallingford, Connecticut in 1863, the company moved its expanding operations to Meriden, Connecticut in 1872. Reorganizations: The company faced financial setbacks leading to a bankruptcy and reorganization in 1878 under the leadership of William F. Rockwell and Lemuel J. Curtis. Diversification: In 1881 and 1882, the company expanded past pure cutlery to manufacture steel pen nibs and ink erasers, eventually becoming a large-scale factory employing over 100 workers. Industry Impact: William Rockwell became a prominent advocate for protective steel tariffs during the 1890s, helping American cutlery compete against established British and German imports. Closure: The cutlery division was sold to the Meriden Knife Company in 1916, though pen production continued until 1943, effectively concluding the pocket knife legacy around 1926. Distinctive Design Characteristics Screw-Fastened Handles: Early pocket knives produced from 1870 up until around 1900 frequently featured handles attached to the scales with small screws rather than standard pins—a sought-after trait for modern collectors.
