That was definitely not in the itinerary. 😂 A clip circulating as tourists caught in the France protests has people asking the same question: what’s happening in France? The wider unrest began with student anger over school conditions and developed into demonstrations about rising living costs and struggling public services. Violence and looting during parts of the protests prompted targeted curfews and further restrictions. But imagine being a visitor trying to understand all that while also figuring out which direction your hotel is. You wanted sightseeing. Now you are checking whether the road ahead is open. The contrast described in this clip is what people find funny: holiday clothes and luggage against a scene of unrest. But being caught somewhere unfamiliar when things turn chaotic would be frightening. And for residents, shopkeepers and workers, there is no flight home that takes them away from the aftermath. This is their neighbourhood. That is the part worth remembering when the France protests become another funny video on our phones. A short clip also cannot tell us what is happening across an entire country. The location, timing and surrounding events matter.
