@donnyjkimball: It’s truly hard to impress upon someone who hasn’t seen it just how beautiful the Urabandai region of Fukushima is during autumn. Perhaps one of the best sites in all of Japan for fall foliage, Urabandai comes alive in stages as color moves from higher wetlands and mountain slopes down toward its lakes and valleys. At Goshikinuma, rowboats sit beneath brilliant maples at Bishamonnuma, where blue-green water and autumn forest create one of the region’s most recognizable views. There are also plenty of opportunities to go trekking nearby, with trails and wooden boardwalks crossing forests, wetlands, and higher ground where colors begin changing earlier. Nakatsugawa Gorge offers something different, with clear water cutting through pale rock beneath autumn forest. What makes Urabandai special is that autumn is not confined to one viewpoint. It unfolds across the entire landscape.
