This mummy, today preserved in the Antikenmuseum Basel, is the burial of a young man from the Roman period in Egypt (2nd century AD). It represents a fascinating fusion of Egyptian and Greco-Roman traditions. The face is covered with a striking mummy portrait painted in the naturalistic style of the Fayum region, giving the deceased an individual and lifelike appearance. These portraits are among the most vivid survivals of ancient art, combining Roman painting techniques with Egyptian funerary beliefs.
