@mind_yourboundaries: ‼️Additional information: - They lived with Kathy for a short time after the wedding. No issues. - She said her DIL always seemed fine just never really interested in having conversations or building a relationship. For example, when they do get together with his side of the family, the DIL is more interested in scrolling than chatting. Kathy’s never mentioned anything she just assumed maybe she was more introverted. - She has a positive relationship with both her sons, doesn’t hound, and understands this is a very big transition. But it’s been three months and she’s seen the baby four times and two of those times her family was there as well. On the flip side it appears, in DILs posts, that she’s over at her parents house or with friends multiple times a week. Okay now that you have all of her side is grandma overreacting or is this how it is, maternal grandmas naturally get more time with the grandkids? Have you delt with this? If so, was there anything that helped communicate your feelings without putting unnecessary pressure on the growing family unit? My in laws come over and expect to be waited on and catered to. My family comes over and takes care of me. That’s the difference.

As a paternal grandmother I need you to hear this. You have to work at the relationship. She’s known her family her entire life she’s knownnyou how long? Not everything is about you. It’s about what they need as a family. You are an invited guest in their life

My MIL doesn’t even ask me how I’m doing or the baby in my belly when I see her and I’m 8 months pregnant. She just talks about herself, her husband and interacts with our toddler. My mom and family check in on my daily or weekly. There’s a huge difference when it comes to choosing the company you keep close, especially after giving birth.

My MIL would love to come see us as a house guest… meaning I would have to take care of her while having a new born… my mom, my friends my sister would come to help… food, allowed me to nap! Help me sign laundry… so yeah there is a difference and you will be treated like it … it is the son responsibility to deal with it! Set expectations! Rules! And boundaries the end

She may be too tired to deal with MIL due to mils behavior. If the MIL is using any past gifts as a control tactic or has said and done hurtful things then yeah the DIL isn’t going to have the energy to deal with that while being freshly post partum

Make them dinner or pickup their favorite takeout! Drop it off, hold baby while they eat don’t ask a million questions, can I help you all do anything? Can I bring anything from grocery store, stay 30 minutes, thank them, love them, do not judge or offer advice, then leave. Next week same thing!

be aggressively kind and inclusive before grandchildren arrive. I have no interest in the only relationship with you being baby creator.

If she's anything like MIL, my. Mil was like a bulldozer when she came in. She didnt listen to us at all, bossed us around, offered unsolicited advice and generally just stressed us out (especially me when I was freshly pp). Maybe she should be asking what it is that she's doing to make it so they are too tired for her and be willing to actually listen

My MIL made my life 100x harder every time she showed up during the hardest time in my life. Why would I go above and beyond for that?

Don’t come to my house postpartum if you aren’t coming with food, to cook, or to clean.

I’m not believing this. I was so close to both my grandmothers as a child. She’s causing problems or she wouldn’t be left out

It’s a super vulnerable time for new families. Mom needs to feel supported and secure before she can be herself in any situation. Maybe ask the son for some insight and then be willing to look in the mirror and make changes.

In my experience, The women’s family tends to care for the woman that actually gave birth, but my in laws don’t call, text or ask about the babies and only want access to the children without having any relationship with me. Just a thought

My mom & MIL both made having a family about me. They took care of me so I could take care of our baby. Because of this, all got unlimited access

Also, the word useage of the son is covering for the daughter in law... Its a red flag for me. He is doing exactly what he should. He is having his wifes back. When our kids get married that becomes the family they need to take care of. We as parents become extended family.

Complaining about seeing the baby 4 times in 3 months is crazy to me. The dad can take the baby to grandma, why does the mother have to sit very much with grandma if she doesn't want to? i also want to see my friend every day but not my mother in law. Makes perfec sence

Being a guest and being helpful aren’t the same thing. Her family and friends and there to see her, he supportive and helpful to her, to be her village and meet her where she is. MIL is there to be hosted, hold the baby and be fed dinner.

I felt like I needed to be on my best behavior, house clean and myself put together around my MIL, I went into a panic if she was coming over. My mom was totally different. How to change that I don’t know, spend more time together maybe, I tried doing that. Maybe MIL can invite DIL to lunch to a neutral location to formulate a friendship that will eventually soften the house visits.

I’m so tired of DIL’s acting like this. Then they’ll turn around and blame the MIL. Relationships are a 2 way street…my MIL was awful. She treated me terribly. You know what I did? I stood up for myself, and figured out how to maintain a relationship. I would never keep my children from them, they adored my kids. My advice? DIL needs to grow up.

Adult people feeling entitled to any access to the newborn another person just removed from their body is weird behavior. I don’t give a sh** if you are the grandparent. Your only concern should be supporting the new life giver in whatever way is most helpful to them INCLUDING ALL THE SPACE THEY WANT.

I would've given my right arm for a MIL that wanted to be in my & my children's life. Mine lives across the road from me and had never been interested in me or my 5 girls. Unless we can do something for her like clean or paint. I once asked if she could babysit and she told me " I raised my kids, I'm done." OK. Well, and that was that.🤷‍♀️Come on people, let's do better. We need more love in the world, starting at home.
