This! How have you dealt with managers that don’t like employees going to HR and feel like HR is overstepping if employees are able to go to HR rather than their manager?

Or when the manager is best friends with the problem person. The Manager doesn't know how to separate friendships and work.

My current manager constantly "hears" things I didn't say. He looks for hidden subtext that doesn't exist. But I feel that if I involved HR it would only worsen our relationship. I've seen how managers can skirt anti retaliation policies by just becoming vigilant at documenting any/everything. If you're not perfectly on time, never absent, meet every deadline, have a happy go lucky attitude and get along with EVERYone, they can find "just cause"

Oh you can’t tell them. Introverts are not liked at work. At all.

Unfortunately, HR makes it hard to have any kind of conversation with them. So that leaves employees with bad managers in limbo.

also HR systems have a way to block birthdays from being visible at all, so managers can't see and celebrate on accident

The first year it happened, I asked my manager not to acknowledge my birthday again. The next year, she doubled down with a surprise party and a catered lunch. That's why I go to HR first.

I have to work with my manager everyday and they have power over my career. I cannot take back a conversation that could potentially have a long lasting impact on my career. Having a conversation with someone who does not have that power so I can find out my options on a particular situation is helpful.

'Why don't you just talk to your manager??' This kind of comment shows a privilege that many of us haven't had. It is a privilege to go through your work life and never have the kind of manager who would mock or berate you for expressing an opinion that doesn't fit neatly into the societal box of norms

As a manager “no problem, thanks for letting me know” needs to be a key phrase in all of our vocabs. Whether it’s reception of feed back or something like this. “Thanks for letting me know, I’ll work on it”.

I worked at a corporation office where they had a voluntary Secret Santa. A few people quietly complained they didn’t understand why the Contoller “a leader” wouldn’t participate (not being a “team player”. It turns out Christmas was contrary to his religion. Your posts on these subjects help educate people. 💕

I worked at a company that spent a lot of time training manager on how to recieve feedback. If your manager isn't a good receiver. People will not talk to you.

I just love how people, leaders in particular, think they can do whatever they want if it’s dressed as “nice” by social norms… and of course, how dare someone not want typically “nice” gestures 🤦♀️
