The Price of Hope Many young Ethiopians begin their journey toward South Africa inspired by stories of relatives, friends, and community members who have found employment, established businesses, or built better lives abroad. These stories create hope and the belief that migration can provide financial stability, improve living conditions, and secure a brighter future for their families. However, the reality can be far more difficult than expected. Some migrants borrow money, sell family property, or rely on relatives and friends to finance their journeys. After leaving home, they may become dependent on smugglers and intermediaries who arrange transportation, accommodation, and passage through different countries. When promises of safe passage or employment are broken, migrants may face unexpected demands for money, threats, confinement, exploitation, or abandonment. Some find themselves stranded far from home, without sufficient food, money, or access to assistance. Meanwhile, families who helped finance the journey may struggle with debt and anxiety, uncertain whether their loved ones will reach their destination safely. For many, the journey begins with a dream. Unfortunately, that dream can become a struggle for survival. A Journey Through Multiple Countries The southern migration route from Ethiopia toward South Africa can involve travelling through several countries in Eastern and Southern Africa. Depending on the route and circumstances, migrants may pass through Kenya, Tanzania, Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, and other countries before reaching their intended destination. The journey can involve long distances, overcrowded vehicles, unsafe accommodation, difficult border crossings, and extended periods without adequate food, water, or medical care. Some migrants travel with the assistance of smugglers, while others rely on informal networks or attempt parts of the journey independently. Migration routes frequently change in response to border controls, law-enforcement activities, transportation arrangements, and the operations of smuggling networks. As a result, migrants may find themselves travelling through unfamiliar areas with limited information about the dangers ahead. Research and humanitarian reporting have documented serious risks along irregular migration routes, including physical violence, exploitation, dangerous transportation conditions, and deaths associated with suffocation in enclosed vehicles. Migrants may also become separated from their travelling companions or disappear without leaving their families with reliable information about their whereabouts. These dangers demonstrate the urgent need for better protection, reliable information, and coordinated assistance for people travelling along the southern route. Families Left Behind: The Human Cost of Migration The consequences of migration extend far beyond the person who leaves home. In villages, towns, and cities across Ethiopia, parents wait for calls from their children. Spouses hope for news from their partners, while children grow up separated from parents who left in search of better opportunities. For many families, every telephone call brings hope, while every period of silence creates fear and uncertainty. Some families sell livestock, land, jewellery, or other valuable possessions to finance a relative’s journey. Others borrow money from friends, neighbours, or informal lenders. When a migrant becomes stranded, disappears, or fails to find employment, the financial burden can fall heavily on the entire household. When communication suddenly stops, families may not know whether their loved one has been detained, hospitalized, robbed, kidnapped, abandoned, or has died along the route. Finding reliable information can be difficult, particularly when the journey crosses several international borders. Some migrants eventually reach South Africa, find work, and support their families through remittances. Others experience prolonged hardship, separation,
