@japdmedia26: 🇫🇷🇲🇦 RABAT, MOROCCO —More than 30 years ago, Morocco's King Hassan II questioned whether Moroccan immigrants could become fully integrated into French society. In an interview published in May 1993, Hassan II said he opposed attempts to integrate Moroccan immigrants into France, stating that they would never be “100 % français,” meaning “100% French.” The remarks were reported by French newspaper Le Monde at the time. The king's comments came during a discussion about France's immigration policies and the challenges facing immigrants. Decades later, France experienced widespread riots between June 27 and July 7, 2023, following the death of 17-year-old Nahel Merzouk during a police traffic stop in Nanterre. The unrest spread across several parts of France. Businesses were looted, vehicles were burned, and public buildings were damaged. However, an official French government investigation published on September 14, 2023, examined a representative sample of 395 court cases involving adults convicted in connection with the unrest. The report found that 78% of the adults covered by the national statistics were French nationals. It also found that opportunism and group influence were prominent motivations among those examined. The findings do not establish that thousands of Moroccan nationals participated in the riots, nor do they prove that Moroccan ancestry or Islamic faith caused the unrest. Hassan II's historical remarks remain part of the debate over immigration, national identity and integration. However, his opinion cannot by itself establish whether integration succeeds or fails for Moroccan communities in France. #France #Morocco #HassanII #Nahel #japd
