Did you know this experience isn't uncommon? Ask almost any professional or caregiver of with autistic people or people with significant communication disabilities, and they'll probably have a dozen stories that sound similar. You're not alone if you've been hit, scratched, cursed at, threatened, or told something deeply hurtful by someone you care about. And you're not a bad person if those moments affect you! The biggest lesson I hope people take away from this story is this: Validation is not condoning. Validation says:

Did you know this experience isn't uncommon? Ask almost any professional or caregiver of with autistic people or people with significant communication disabilities, and they'll probably have a dozen stories that sound similar. You're not alone if you've been hit, scratched, cursed at, threatened, or told something deeply hurtful by someone you care about. And you're not a bad person if those moments affect you! The biggest lesson I hope people take away from this story is this: Validation is not condoning. Validation says:
"I understand why this happened." Condoning says:
"It was okay that it happened." Those are not the same thing. For many of my clients, especially those with apraxia or significant communication differences, they already carry enough shame after these moments. Adding more shame rarely teaches a new skill. Instead, we problem solve together: Would it help if I took you to a quieter space?
Would sensory input help?
Should we leave the room?
What can I do to support you before things get this big? Because the goal isn't to excuse harmful language, it's to give someone the tools so they don't have to rely on it anymore. If you're a caregiver or professional navigating situations like these, I know how isolating they can feel. You don't have to figure it out by yourself. If you ever need support, guidance, or simply someone who understands these experiences, please reach out. ❤️ Follow @support_the_spectrum for more neurodiversity-affirming education, and visit www.support-the-spectrum.com for free resources and consultation information. #autism #actuallyautistic #speechtherapy #slp #speechlanguagepathologist
