They also pay in ny 3000 dollars per person to have a room at the shelter. But won’t make living affordable

It’s funny how TikTok poster likes all the replies to my comment saying “but my wage!” And it’s either a state wage not a city or locale, the rent they say is just wrong or an average (not minimum rent), and otherwise never like my comments showing how these people just gloss over a apartments at 1/2 or 3/4 their supposed rent price. Really makes you wonder how people think the real world actually works…

The simple answer is, that a person making $7.25/hour isn't renting an average place. You see, a person earning the MINIMUM wage is going to renting a place at the BOTTOM of the rental range. Now. Here is a much better question. Can someone show me a posting for a job that pays Federal Minimum wage, that's not a tipped position?

By your logic the average rent in America of $1600 actually lines up perfectly with the average American household income. The average household income in the United States is $126,700. The average rent is actually only 1/6th of the average monthly income.

Id understand making 3x more than rent if rent wasn't 2k a month for a 2 bed house

Why are you using average rent? Minimum wage isn’t average wage so shouldn’t you use low rent and compare it to low wage?

Cyaeb :
Why take average rent and compare it to minimum wage? Go minimum rent in your area and compare to minimum wage.

Does no one teach anyone statistics any more? Using the avg doesn’t give you a good idea of what most rents are, that’d be the median rental price which is $1388. But that also means there are many units for cheaper than that but the median rent is $1388, the median household income is $88k per year… again, people need to stop acting like minimum wage or low wage is the average situation and then expecting those individuals to live average lives…

disingenuous numbers. the average rent is veing skewed by cities that have minimum wages much higher than the one listed

Let’s also remember that even when you do make enough money, you’re not guaranteed to get the apartment. It’s not just a matter of finding something in your budget. No one is talking about the ways even the rental market is so competitive right now that you can be declined for the housing that you CAN afford because someone else who makes more and is an on-paper stronger applicant wanted to downsize and applied at the same time as you.

Median rent is 1388 (16,500 annually) and median salary is 65,000. The median salary is over 3x the median rent.
