Conjure Roots of North Carolina: Ep. 34 Margaret Burke & the Story of a Blocked Birth in Guilford County. What can an old folk story tell us about the spiritual beliefs that circulated in Black North Carolina communities more than a century ago? In 1917, white folklorist Elsie Clews Parsons published a collection of folklore from Guilford County, North Carolina. Among the stories was one shared by Margaret Burke, a Black woman born free to free parents. The tale centers on a difficult childbirth believed to be connected to spiritual interference, and an unusual act involving a sack near a chimney. This account is fascinating because it preserves ideas about spiritual harm, the interruption of childbirth, and the possibility of reversing that harm. At the same time, the original story leaves important details unexplained. We can't automatically treat it as a verified Hoodoo ritual or a documented historical event, but it gives us a valuable piece of Black oral tradition to examine. White folklorists documented many stories about conjure and rootwork in Black communities. Their collections can preserve voices and traditions that might otherwise have been lost, while also reminding us to consider who recorded the stories, how they were interpreted, and what the original sources actually tell us. Read the original source and explore the story for yourself: 📚 Elsie Clews Parsons, “Tales from Guilford County, North Carolina” (1917) https://sites.pitt.edu/~dash/type0326.html This is Conjure Roots of NC...
