Jane Seymour had become King Henry VIII’s third wife on 30th May 1536, just eleven days after the execution of her predecessor, Anne Boleyn. Henry had high hopes for his third marriage. His previous wives had only been able to provide him two daughters, and a son who lived for less than two months, and he desperately needed a legitimate Prince of Wales, and a spare would be good too. Jane’s mother had had ten children, of whom six had survived childhood, three of those being sons, so perhaps Henry saw Jane as a good bet for producing a son. He certainly did everything he could to get rid of Anne quickly and to replace her with Jane. #henryviii #henryviiiwives #janeseymour #anneboleyn #HistoryTime #historylover #tudors

Catherine of Braganza (1638–1705) was a Portuguese princess who married Charles II of England in 1662. It was a political marriage, designed to strengthen the alliance between England and Portugal. But Catherine was about to discover that being Queen of England didn’t necessarily mean being the most influential woman in her husband’s life. Enter Barbara Villiers, later Countess of Castlemaine and Duchess of Cleveland. Barbara was already Charles’s established mistress when Catherine arrived in England. In fact, Barbara’s relationship with the king predated his marriage. She was determined to maintain her position, and her rivalry with the new queen became one of the most notorious scandals of the Restoration court. Things became even more uncomfortable when Charles insisted that Barbara be appointed to Catherine’s household as one of her ladies of the bedchamber. Imagine having your husband’s mistress officially installed among your own attendants! And Barbara wasn’t the last. Charles had several other famous mistresses, including the actress Nell Gwyn and the Frenchwoman Louise de Kéroualle, who eventually became Duchess of Portsmouth. Louise also served in Catherine’s household before becoming the king’s mistress. Meanwhile, Catherine faced another heartbreaking difficulty: despite several pregnancies and miscarriages, she never produced a surviving heir. #CatherineOfBraganza #CharlesII #BarbaraVilliers #NellGwyn #LouiseDeKeroualle
