@antonia_investing: I told Times readers I’d happily pay more income tax. I expected to get torn apart. I didn’t. My latest column argues that one honest rise in the basic rate beats a string of stealth taxes most people never see coming, and the comments section mostly backed me. But there were some sharp counter-arguments too, like cutting the personal allowance instead, or slashing spending first. This is my opinion, not financial advice. One visible tax rise or lots of hidden ones: which would you pick? Source: my column in The Times
How about more tax bands so we make it exponentially progressive. And align capital tax on income tax. And add a wealth tax so the jobless hoarders pay too and land doesn’t sit unproductively.

The fact is all the messing around pretending they are not increasing tax makes our tax system more complex and actually takes more money from lower earners.
For example increasing the tax threshold to £15k but increasing each band by 2% so tax bands were 22%, 42% and 47%, would actually be revenue neutral but it would mean people earning under £40k would pay less tax and those over paying more.
This goes to show how freezing thresholds has increased tax with those on lower wages bearing the brunt on tax increases.

Why can’t they just put one % applied to all let us say 25% then raise the threshold to £18,000 for everyone and £25,000 for low earners. And we all live happily ever after

We have so many small taxes for the sake of saving political face. But each of them have unintentional consequences.

I've always hated how repeated manifestos from all sides state they will not raise income tax. It's so dumb to limit the tools available to run an economy - the most obvious tool too. It says to me economically illiterate every time.

I don’t think any taxes should be increased until government can account for the waste and efficiency in the system. There are so many areas that need addressing first such as welfare, public sector wages and pensions, net zero, immigration the nhs. It’s an endless list of waste.

I’d rather we get value for money first before asking for more money. I like the idea but everyone has different circumstances but in general, the idea could work.

The problem is they keep chipping away .. take take take … the issue isn’t the contribution I’m happy to pay Tax .. my problem is the sheer squandering of the money they take and they don’t do anything about it ! It’s a leaky Bucket that will continually be empty until the holes are treated

That’s not on the table tho’ they need more than they can make from an income tax rise - also if you’re well off then it won’t impact you in the same way it will with low and middle earners. What they need to do is cut spending - check out Contract Finder - there are £millions being spent on vanity projects.

That would be better and would generate more and consistent money and ring fence a % for NHS or the carer package for elderly

If you could guarantee that they’d only put up the obvious ones, then yes, I agree with you but I think they would do that and slip in the hidden ones anyway

Spending cuts first; predominantly on foreign aid. You don’t help your neighbour when he can’t pay his bills if you can’t. Then look at Welfare, then increase the tax. When we’re back in order; then sure - go nuts with foreign aid

Or just stop the gross overspending on pointless projects like HS2, stop letting politicians & their cronies get away with PPE scandals. And actually have competent politicians & mo’s that are qualified to run a country. Rather than taxing the working into an early grave.

What a silly attempt at distraction. You want to make everyone’s income tax to rise, to distract from them properly taxing your assets. Yes let’s make the tax code simpler, and let’s also close the loopholes allowing tax avoidance on passive income. Let’s mark one clear change, capital gains, inheritence tax, dividend tax and corporation tax to 40%. And ban trusts and personal investment accounts.
