Unfortunately, your adult children are often the gatekeepers. If they’ve asked you to stay away, respect that boundary. Sometimes the less conflict surrounding your presence, the less opportunity there is for your grandchildren to hear a distorted narrative about you. But please don’t lose hope. Grandchildren grow up. They begin to think for themselves, ask questions, and sometimes seek out the grandparents they’ve been kept from. I see these reconciliations happen. And remember, children are watching. When they grow up seeing their parents cut off and disrespect their own parents, they may learn to repeat that same behavior. The cycle can continue into another generation. Love your grandchildren from a distance if you must.
